Web Start Up: Learnemy.com

People who know me well would know that I used to be fascinated with all the techy techy stuff that people could do on the internet to help bridge people together in all sorts of interesting ways. Actually, I still am. I used to have a tuition site which links tutors and students together as a just-for-fun kind of project for my university holidays. Now that I pulled the plug on it, thinking back it does leave a little hole in my life. As I flipped the papers today, I noticed that an individual came up with this site called Learnemy which links people who want to teach certain skills to people who want to learn certain skills. The essence is quite similar to what I had in the past, just that mine was of a specific genre, tuition.

In addition, Learnemy has successes where I did not have. They integrated the monetizing aspect where they could take 20% of commission from any successful link. I didn’t have that, which is why mine was a project and not a business. And this is why I have all the more respect and admiration that someone went out of her way to do so much more, and I’m really impressed.

So far I have seen table tennis teachers, squash teachers, coding teachers etc and it really looks promising. I thought, I wouldn’t mind doing something like that again as a project when I have more time. At least, it’s a hobby that I could use to do self development. 🙂  The site reminds me of those educational sites where university professors come to give free lessons. I used to take one of the lessons until I couldn’t keep up as I went overseas for a few weeks. Maybe one day I can teach something as well!

Search Terms

I thought it would be interesting to do a search term post again since I have not posted something like that for months. These are the following search terms that I thought I would address:

1. “air force engineer” rsaf
I’ve been getting some variations of the above for the previous month. I guess it is now job hunting season again for the fresh graduates. However it seemed interesting that nobody left a comment asking for any sharing of what it is like being an Air Force Engineer, considering that I am one myself. Leave a message if you are really interested in the job and I will contact you though email to answer any queries.

2. does mindef allow dyed hair
I thought that would be quite clear cut. The answer is no.

3. acceptable hairstyle for saf
This varies depending on which stage you are at. Trainees are expected to cut a shorter and neater hairstyle during their term of training, while soldiers in the units are given a little more leeway. They are still expected to keep it short and neat.

4. citibank clear card for tertiary student to purchase apple
Well the tertiary clear card only has a limit of $500 so if your Apple product costs more than that, sorry.

5. csit interview how long
Mine took 1 hour plus! I think I nailed that interview but I didn’t proceed to the next round despite being accepted for it due to my acceptance of RSAF’s offer.

6. does going university really matter in saf
I think in any organisation linked to civil service, going to university would matter. It would affect the grade you are in and the job you are doing. However do take note that going to university does not automatically qualify you for officership. The officer role in the SAF is required to have something called leadership which is a rather abstract concept since different individuals would have a different notion.

7. dreaded OCS pool jump
That jump is actually from a platform 5m above the pool. It is extremely mind-f**king to be honest. It affected me for some days thinking about it as I didn’t like all the free-fall kind of thing. The officers in my batch told us not to look at the pool when we are on top, so I didn’t. I only remembered telling myself to jump and get it over with. When I hit the pool, I was actually happy. It was a sense of contentment and accomplishment, like I did something I was really scared about and conquered it. So if you have the chance to go to OCS, please do the jump proudly. It is an experience to take away.

Search Terms Updates

It’s time for another round of search terms review. I have taken the search terms used to reach my blog in the past 1 month and here are the few “more interesting” items listed:

1) change name bakerzin to bakerzin

What is that seriously? Is there even a name change?

2) chinese drama whole story

What kind of drama is that guy even looking for?

3) ee4302 joke

Hahahah I didn’t know there’s a joke about a module which you can find online

4) fyp ca1

Seems like many juniors are getting stressed. Indeed it is that time where the first CA report is due to be submitted and presented.

5) ignorantsoul london weight management

I should start to sell ignorantsoup for the ignorantsoul.

6) is whatsapp included in singtel bis plan.

If this question is asking if using whatsapp is included in the bis, the answer is no. Singtel bis, if I remember correctly, is only for Blackberry apps pre-installed on your device.

7) nus degree is bull shit

Go to hell sir. It might not be a top degree like Imperial College or Cambridge but it’s definitely not bullshit.

8) taiwan pron videos

Haha. Oh please this is not a pron website. Why would such a search term come here anyway!

9) Where to buy c-peel t166

Hi, if you would like to buy c-peel t166 from me, I have a second hand set which I used for a month as a transition phone before I switched to my blackberry. Do leave a comment here and I will get back to you.

Wacky Search Terms

I thought it was rather amusing to see what kind of search terms that people use in search engines that end up on my site. Sometimes I am surprised, other times I am appalled. Like the number of times I see the word “upskirt” or “downblouse” leading to my site simply because I once did a post where I talked about it in a professional manner, probably to chastise it or something.

So here are a list of search terms that I thought is interesting to share, and some of my views if I have any on them; mostly to help subsequent people who come this way.

1. I never meet her at the bus stop

Like huh. Why would that ever come to my blog?

2. ia ntu interviewing non interviewing

From what I have heard from my NTU friends, it is a mix of interviewing and non interviewing, depending on the company involved; this is true, at least for Engineering.

3. national service enlistment for girls in singapore

It is not a requirement for girls to enlist into national service in Singapore. However, girls can choose to sign up as regular soldiers.

4. qualifying english test answers

Whatever made you think that there were such things? Who is that pro enough to remember the passages and composition questions?

5. which terminal at changi will sq222 arrive at?

Come on please check Changi Airport’s website instead. It’s free and it is more accurate. No blog is that boliao to keep updating flight timings when there is a website for that already!

6. estimated psle difficulty level 2011

Running around NTU

I haven’t been running my usual training with the AFEs since I fell sick last week and got so feverish that I thought it best not to over exert myself lest I fall sick again. Hence it had actually been more than a week since I actually ran and trained myself.

Running began at my house as I met Chubang at the main gate of my condo. We ran all the way along the MRT track to Boon Lay to meet up with zai sir and the three of us proceeded to run towards Pioneer MRT and head towards NTU via the Pioneer road entrance.

We ran an entire round round NTU, from the Pioneer Road entrance up to the Jalan Behar entrance to NIE where the live firing area is. I could hear the live firing going on and it sure brings back memories. Up the stupid NTU slope and then down slope all the way past the Chinese Heritage center, hall 4 and hall 1 and finally ending at hall 2.

After plotting the route on runkeeper, they estimate it to be 9.49km. A good run, a little slow since there’s up slopes that are so insane, but I had a great time. I sweat a little too much but I guess I felt happy sweating it all out. 🙂

CPeel: Converting iTouch to iPhone

I bought the CPeel (casing can be seen above) from MobileConceptz, a shop opposite Bukit Gombak MRT. It costs $139 since I bought it directly. If you would so choose, you may buy it through their website but shipping costs an additional $8. Since Bukit Gombak wasn’t far away, I just went down on my own. There are two additional locations in Sim Lim and Funan where you can get the CPeel (check the address inside the website).

That is how it looks like inside the box. Obviously I had purchased the white version. The CPeel comes in black as well. The model number is the T166 for the iPod touch 2 and 3. There are other versions of the CPeel for iTouch 4, but I can’t be bothered since the iTouch 4 has a front facing camera. What is the point of using CPeel instead of an iPhone for the iTouch 4 is something that I cannot understand. If the nature of my work allowed for a camera handphone, I wouldn’t go through all the trouble.

As you can see the basic package comes with 2 batteries (you’ll need one of them to power the CPeel), an instructional manual (which only tells you how to insert your SIM card and battery) and the CPeel itself. There are no instructions on how to install the software. The website provided above provides a tutorial which is very confusing, hence I will just briefly go through the steps that I took, so in the future people who are attempting this might find it easier than I did.

How to configure your iPod Touch 2 (iTouch 2) to work with the CPeel T166:
1) You may update your iOS to the maximum possible which is 4.2.1 (that’s what I have. It seems like the other improved iOS is not supported by the iTouch2)
2) Jailbreak it using any method that you know of. What I did was to use greenpois0n. The software to download is listed on the right hand side under Jailbreak Firmware 4.2.1.
3) Go to Cydia, manage, settings, developer, search for “mobile substrate” and install
4) Go to Manage, click on Sources
5) Click Edit followed by Add
6) Add the URL: http://coming.hk/cydia
7) After it has been added, click the new source and install the software listed there. For me there is only one software so I just installed that.
8) It should then work. Press the on button for the CPeel, and then push your iTouch 2 into the CPeel. Do remember that you must not have any password settings for your SIM Card, else it would read as Invalid SIM.

That’s it. Hope future people who come to this page can get some good help from here. Feel free to leave comments and I will reply them ASAP. 🙂

Drama: Shao Nian Yang Jia Jiang

I watched 《少年杨家将》 because I wanted to know the story of the Yang family. It seemed apt to watch all these interesting dramas set in the olden times, after I had watched movies like Legend of the Condor Heroes, Return of the Condor Heroes etc, comprising of the “new batch” of idols. Hu Ge, who acted as Yang Liu Lang was Guo Jing in LOCH, and Yuan Hong who acted as Yelu Xie in the drama was Yang Kang in LOCH. It seemed ironic that the enemy of the Yang family was next cast as their descendant.

As usual with the “shao nian” series, this story takes place before the main stories at a time when the characters were younger. This story revolves around how Yang Ye, the father taught his family values like loyalty and the unyielding spirit as well as a deep sense of patriotism. As with all dramas with villians, the Yang family has always met with trouble, which resulted in the deaths of Yang Ye, Yang Da Lang, Yang Er Lang, Yang San Lang and Yang Qi Lang.

The ending few episodes of the drama was most touching and heart wrenching. When the Prime Minister told tales to the Emperor, you just feel so angry, but then you felt angrier because the Emperor couldn’t discern who was his loyal subject and who wasn’t. Just because he lacked faith in the Yang Family, five men died.

When the wife of Wu Lang knocked him unconscious, resulting in him being unable to go to his father’s and brothers’ aid, I felt a sense of disappointment and anger. It was as if the person who was his wife could not understand him at all. That he would rather go into battle and die with his family than to run like a coward knowing that his family was being killed off one by one. I could understand how he couldn’t forgive her after that.

The accumulation of emotions from intensity of the battle and what seemed like a slaughter, coupled with betrayal, mistrust, capture of the upright people and finally the scene where they brought the bodies back to the capital just seemed to make it even more upsetting. But then you develop a sense of how evil war is, and that sometimes the soldiers from both sides are innocent, but they die all the same. Plus they die so fast and in such huge numbers, it’s impossible to bring their bodies back to their family.

The only gripe I had is that the upright people die so epic-ly but the evil villians just die in a simple painless manner. Is it really that easy to catch the Prime Minister and convict him?

The video below is the theme song for the drama. I liked it very much. I like how the way chinese words can be strung together to form longer meanings but the number of words used is very minimal. Enjoy.
